PCF is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday from Noon to 4pm for visits and adoptions of Cats and Small Critters. At this time, Dog visits and adoptions will still be scheduled by appointment only for pre-approved adopters. Appointments for Cats and Small Critters can also be scheduled, as needed.

**The PCF Adoption Application can be downloaded, completed, and emailed to info@petscomefirst.com to begin the appointment and adoption process!***

THE PROCESS

1. Visit Animals
We encourage all prospective adopters to come into the shelter during our open hours to visit with the animals! You can feel free to visit as long as you need to ensure the right choice for both your and the pet. Our staff will share as much background and behavioral information as we have available to ensure a good fit.

Since we are a rescue organization that takes in animals from a variety of situations, remember that we may have limited information about the animal prior to their time at PCF – we will share whatever information we have along with our observations since being at PCF. When you have selected the right pet for you and your lifestyle, you can move on to complete the Adoption Application. Please note that to be an eligible adopter, we require that all other animals in the household are spayed and neutered.

2. Adoption Application
Please answer all questions fully, honestly, and to the best of your ability in order for us to match you with the right pet. We want our adoptions to be forever! Once the application has been submitted, we will review it and ask any follow up questions that may be needed. Please be patient – we do our best to ensure that all animals are going into the best homes possible.

Please note that to be an eligible adopter, we require that all other animals in the household are spayed and neutered.

Not sure who you want to adopt? That’s OK! You may choose to complete the application process to be “pre-approved”. You will then be entered into our system as an approved adopter and will be ready to adopt when you select the right fit for your family.

For dogs, we also offer a “foster to adopt” program that allows you to foster a dog for 2 weeks to ensure the correct fit with other family members and pets in the household. During this time we request that you remain in contact with us on how things are progressing, and if you continue to move towards adoption. This is a great option for families with other animals or children.

Our application is not available to submit online because we want prospective adopters to come into the shelter for us to meet you, and for you to meet the animals! You can download the PCF Adoption Application to complete and bring with you when you come into the shelter.

The length of time to have an application approved is typically equal to how quickly we are able to be in contact with your 2 non-family references and veterinarian. It can help to let your references know that we will be calling so they can be ready to accept the call, or willing to call us back when they are available. We will contact you when your application has been approved.

3. Adoption Contract
When it comes time to complete the adoption, you will be asked to sign a contract – please take the time to read the contract carefully before signing. If you are unable to keep the animal, then you are required to return it to Pets Come First. You will receive a copy of the signed contract to take with you as well.

Our staff will review the vaccination and medical history of the pet, and supply you with the information for you and your veterinarian.

4. Adoption Fees
Adoption fees help to cover a portion of the vet care required to prepare the animal for adoption, and they can very according to the type of animal, age, and level of vet care that was required. The fee includes spay or neuter, microchip, and updated vaccinations. Microchips are automatically registered to the new owner at the time of adoption. Cats are tested for FIV and Feline Leukemia. Dogs are 4DX tested for heartworm, lyme, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichia, and treated accordingly.

Fees listed below are guidelines and may differ by animal depending on the vet care that was required.

Cat Adoption Fees

  • Cats (1+ years) – $50
  • Kittens (under 1 year) – $75

Dog Adoption Fees

  • Dogs (1+ years) – $200-$250
  • Puppies (up to 1 year) – $300-$400

5. Follow Up
We encourage adopters to keep us updated on your new family member through sending photos or testimonials through our Facebook page or to info@petscomefirst.com. Please also contact us if any issues or concerns arise.
