Without our volunteers, Pets Come First would not exist. Volunteers donate their time, talent, and money so that more animals can be saved. If you are committed to making a difference for the animals in our community, please fill out the application below and become a volunteer!  All volunteers are required to complete a waiver to begin their volunteer work.

Please note: The minimum age to volunteer with Pets Come First is 18 years old.

A fellow volunteer or staff member will be in contact with you via email after submitting your volunteer application to give you additional information on how to get started.  Please choose from the following two volunteer opportunities and fill out the correlating application  Thank you for your interest in Pets Come First!

Volunteering inside the shelter:

We have Team Members at the shelter from at least 8am to 5pm daily.  We typically ask that volunteers come in after 9am to allow the team to get animals fed prior to new volunteers arriving.  If you are coming to the shelter during hours when we are closed to the public, please come around to the back door and let a Team Member know that you are there to volunteer.  You will need to sign a waiver, and then we will put you to work!  When you begin volunteering, you will start by helping with a variety of things like dishes, mopping, cleaning litter pans, raking leaves, etc.  Please let us know if you there are other specific areas of volunteering that you are interested in!  Click here to complete this volunteer application!

Dog Walking Volunteers:

There are 3 different dog walking crews that walk the dogs typically around 4:30pm or 5:30pm depending on the night of the week and then Saturdays at 10am and Sundays at 9:30am. We each have purchased a supply of harnesses and leashes that we can share with you.  Due to the training and interaction with the dogs that is required with our Dog Walking team, we are only accepting new walkers that can commit to regularly volunteering each week.

We walk in an open field through all kinds of weather so please dress in older clothes and appropriate footwear.  The fields can be very muddy or snowy depending on the time of year. Initially you will be walking with other walkers so that we can introduce you to the dogs and help you get to know their personalities.

The dogs really enjoy getting our for walks and it is such a rewarding experience. We would be happy to have you join one of our dog walking crews if that sounds like something you’d be interested in.

Training volunteers to work with the dogs is a big time commitment and for that reason we can’t accept applications for court-mandated community service for this volunteer opportunity.   Click here to complete this volunteer application!
